Every time I read or listen to the prodigal son story being shared, I become inquisitive, the first question I ask is, did he make a mistake by asking for his inheritance from the father? I am yet to hear a Yes or a No on that matter.
A woman, who, to many maybe viewed as uneducated or what others would say, uncultured pestered the judge as she kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ The judge reacted on her pestering behavior, I think he understood that she was asking for something she desperately needed in the best way she knew how to. The Judge bowed to her ‘asking’ and he said as it is written in the scriptures, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”
These are few examples of scenarios where asking beared fruits, so, after all, asking is not all that bad, you actually could get a yes! The turning point in our lives is when we realize that you got to be willing to ask for help or ask for what you know you deserve. That can be daunting, where did the young prodigal son actually gather the courage from to ask for his inheritance?
Asking require you lower your drawbridge and admit you actually need help, or assistance or acceptance…This is very difficult for the so called independents or those running their own ship. It is even more tough for those in leadership positions or the masculine gender. It is tough to ask. No one want to be vulnerable and so we rarely ask. Having said that, the question that we then ought to ask ourselves is, can you get what you want, if you do not ask for it?
It is documented in the gospels of Matthew : ….And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Something to note;
Asking for help does not only require admission that you need help which takes guts or a high level of desperation that you do not care anymore what people think of you, but also willingness to allow those people to have some say in your personal affairs. This is not so welcome as it can get dirty as you may land in the hands of a tyrant or a control freak.
Ask, you may (will) get a Yes!
D. J. De Haan, an American Bible teacher wrote a poem, the poem goes like this; Though life is often filled with pain, though death looms just ahead, The Lord can fill your heart with peace and take away the dread. That is amazing, it then takes me to a favorite scripture in the book […]
